Abstract

IntroductionDental caries and periodontal diseases are the most prevalent human diseases. Honey, Glycyrrhiza glabra, and vitamin E have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate chewing gum containing G glabra, honey, and vitamin E as an antioxidants on oral and gingival health. MethodsA total of 155 dental students were selected and divided into five groups. A chewing gum (containing G glabra, honey, and vitamin E) and a placebo were prepared separately. Two questionnaires were filled out for each student before and after the intervention. Bleeding on probing, plaque index, gingival index, Decay Missing Filling Teeth (DMFT) index, and salivary bacteria counts were recorded before and after the intervention. All statistical analyses were performed using Stata 14 software. ResultsGingival index, bleeding on probing, and plaque index decreased in all the groups after intervention. The highest reduction was related to gingival inflammation in the case group. There was a decrease in salivary bacterial counts in all the groups after the intervention. The highest reduction was seen in the case group. ConclusionsThe chewing gum containing G glabra, honey, and vitamin E enhanced oral health. Gingival index, bleeding on probing, plaque index, and salivary bacterial counts decreased in all the groups after the intervention, especially in the case group.
