Abstract

Banana fiber is generally obtained from the pseudo-stem of banana plant and frequently used to reinforce polymers. Banana fiber provides good mechanical, physical and chemical properties to banana fiber reinforced polymer composites. Common preparation techniques used to prepare banana fiber composites are compression molding, injection molding and hot pressing. Banana fiber is frequently chemically treated to increase the adhesion between banana fiber and polymer matrix. Common chemical treatment includes alkali treatment, sodium lauryl sulfate treatment and maleic anhydride treatment. According to the literature, properties of banana fiber reinforced polymer composites generally improved with increase in banana fiber content. Chemical treatment of banana fiber generally increases the properties of resultant polymer composites.
