Abstract

In the present study the solid particle erosion characteristics of the cenosphere filled GJJG reinforced composites have been studied experimentally. Jute(450-450) and glass (00-900) of fabric orientation reinforced composites filled with different doses of ceramic rich cenosphere weight percentage(5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) were prepared by hand lay up technique. For this, an air jet type erosion test rig and taguchi orthogonal arrays have been used. The findings of the experiments indicate that the rate of erosion by impact of silica sand was greatly influenced by various control factors. The cenosphere filler of stacking sequence GJJG hybrid composites showed semi-ductile erosion behaviour with maximum erosion at (45°-60°) impingement angle. Overall the erosion rate was found to increase with impact velocity. Furthermore, the cenosphere filler content is the powerful influencing factor followed by impact velocity, impingement angle, erodent size and erosion time during the erosive wear. The comparative study indicates that the addition of particulate filler exhibit better erosive wear performance. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and S/N (signal to noise) ratios analysis is performed on measured data to investigate the influence of material and geometrical parameters on dynamic response.
