Abstract

Cataract and glaucoma are the first and second leading causes of blindness worldwide that affect the older population. Hence, the interaction between these two diseases is of interest to clinicians.Intraocular Pressure (IOP) is a function of aqueous humor secretion rate, episcleral venous pressure, and outflow facility at the anterior chamber angle.Phacoemulsification cataract surgery has been shown by numerous studies to significantly reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), in glaucomatous and non- glaucomatous eyes. Although the mechanism of action responsible for postoperative IOP reduction remains under debate, many studies lend support to the theory of improved aqueous access to the trabecular meshwork (TM) as one of the mechanisms of IOP reduction. The following changes in AC parameters after cataract removal have been demonstrated: increased AC depth, increased AC volume and increased AC angle width.The aim of the work is to assess the effect of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation on intraocular pressure (IOP) and anterior chamber parameters in patients with cataract.
