Abstract

IN 1950 we reported (Van Middlesworth, 1950) that we had raised rats on purified casein diets containing very little iodide (20-50 μg. iodide/kg, of diet, Van Middlesworth, 1951) and no goiter resulted. Since then we have attempted to elucidate the mechanism of this phenomenon (Van Middlesworth, 1953). Axelrad and Leblond (1954) recently reportedthat casein prevented goiter in mice fed a low iodide diet.
