Abstract

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) nanocomposites were fabricated using carboxylic acid functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (c-MWCNT) by solvent mixing method. Five different weight compositions of c-MWCNT in ABS were fabricated ranging from 1 to 10 wt% (1, 3, 5, 7.5, 10). The distribution of c-MWCNT in ABS/c-MWCNT nanocomposite was analyzed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) technique. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on c-MWCNT for structural analysis and to confirm the presence of c-MWCNT. The ABS/c-MWCNT nanocomposites were the subjected to mechanical characterization in which the nanocomposites showed significant improvement in the compressive Young’s modulus in comparison to pure ABS, especially at lower weight percentage of c-MWCNT in ABS/c-MWCNT nanocomposites. The maximum improvement in Young’s modulus was shown by 5 wt% nanocomposite of 38% in comparison to pure ABS. Improvement in the mechanical property of ABS polymer by adding c-MWCNT will be highly beneficial for improving and widening the applicability of ABS.
