Abstract

Experiments were conducted with adult confused flour beetles, Tribolium confusum Jacquelin duVal, and granary weevils, Sitophilus granarius (L.), to determine the effect of CO2 on the efficacy of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or methyl bromide fumigation. The effectiveness of HCN fumigation to T. confusum adults was increased up to 4 times by addition of various percentages of CO2; while that of methyl bromide fumigation was increased up to 1.5 times. Effectiveness of HCN fumigation to S. granaries adults was increased up to 1.7 times by the addition of various percentages of CO2; that of methyl bromide fumigation was increased up to 1.4 times. The greatest susceptibility was shown by confused flour beetle adults to HCN + CO2 mixtures at 80°F.
