Abstract

Objective To observe the application of camellia oil in oral care of patients with sepsis and the effect of preventing hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP). Methods From January 2015 to December 2017, 128 patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU), emergency intensive care unit (EICU) or respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) and diagnosed with sepsis were selected. The patients were divided into observation group and control group by simple random sampling method, with 64 cases each. The control group was given routine oral care with compound chlorhexidine gargle, and the observation group used camellia oil for oral care.HAP incidence, mechanical ventilation incidence, hemodialysis utilization rate, ICU stay, total hospital stay and 28-day mortality were collected.Sputum culture results and inflammatory factors〔lactate dehydrogenase (IL-6), lactic acid, C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) levels 〕were compared at 48 hours, 5 days, 10 days or discharge after oral care with camellia oil. Results The HAP incidence, hemodialysis rate, monitoring time and total hospitalization time of the observation group were shorter than that of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P 0.05). There was no significant difference in sputum culture between the two groups at admission(P>0.05). However, after nursing, the detection rate of total pathogenic bacteria in sputum culture decreased, and the difference between the observation group and the control group was statistically significant(P 0.05). After intervention, serum IL-6, LDH, CRP and PCT levels in the two groups were optimized, but the indicator levels in the observation group were better than the control group, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05). Conclusions Camellia oil has good anti-inflammatory effect and its application in oral care can reduce the incidence of HAP in patients with sepsis. Key words: Camellia oil; Sepsis; Oral care; Hospital acquired pneumonia
