Abstract

Abstract Although current mechanical properties of formations may provide rough estimates of subsurface horizontal stresses, they are inadequate to ascertain which of two adjacent formations has the higher horizontal stress. Temperatures, creep, and changes in material properties and strain during burial have a significant influence on today's state of stress.
