Abstract

The applications of fluorescent ultraviolet-absorbing compounds or brighteners in studies of biological systems was first investigated by Darken (1961) when their use as biological markers was reported. Subsequent work by Darken and Swift (1963) disclosed an increase in the per cent spore germination, as evidenced by colony count of Penicillium chrysogenum Thom and of an unidentified streptomycete, when a brightener was added to the spore suspensions. This paper presents details of the investigation and extends the range of this observation to ten species representing five genera.
