Abstract

1. Doping of temper hardened steels containing 0.15–0.25% C with boron improves their bulk hardenability. As a result, the strength of boron containing low manganese steels attain the level of boronless steels with high manganese content. At the same time impact toughness and ductility remain practically unchanged. 2. In the investigated steels doped with boron, boron containing inclusions may segregate; their composition and structure are determined by the content of carbon in the steel (with 0.15% C boride segregates, with 0.25% C it is boride+borocementite, and with 0.45% C it is borocementite).
