Abstract

1. Heating steel in a boron carbide/borax mixture is an effective boriding treatment, the best results being obtained with a mixture containing 16% borax. 2. The diffused layers produced on steel by this treatment consist of needle-like iron borides, FeB and Fe2B; their relatively high specific volume leads to the appearance of residual compressive stresses of considerable magnitude. 3. Boriding brings about a significant increase in fatigue and corrosion-fatigue strength of steel.
