Abstract

BN whisker reinforced Si3N4 (BNw/Si3N4) microwave transparent composites were prepared by gas pressure sintering at 1800°C in N2 atmosphere. The effects of BN whiskers on the dielectric and mechanical properties of BNw/Si3N4 composites were investigated. The results showed that the addition of BN whiskers could effectively improve the dielectric properties of BNw/Si3N4 composites while maintaining relatively good mechanical properties compared with the addition of BN particles. The dielectric constant, bending strength and fracture toughness of the composites with 15 vol.-%BN whiskers reached 3·8, 215 MPa and 4·31 MPa m1/2 respectively. The principal crystal phases of the composites were h-BN and β-Si3N4. The interlocked microstructure of BN whiskers and rod-like β-Si3N4 was responsible for the relatively good mechanical properties of BNw/Si3N4 composites.
