Abstract

Coating colors applied in the paper industry are subjected to a wide range of shear rates between 0 and 10 6 s -1 . Previous research concerning associated rheological measurements showed two different scales of shear rate. The first group of measurements was carried out over the range 0-100 s -1 using a rotating viscometer, whereas the second group of measurements covered a much wider range of 0-10 6 s -1 using several types of rheometers. This present study was carried out to investigate the effect of different binding materials on the flow behavior of a paper pigment suspension over a wide shear rate range of 10-10 6 s -1 using one type of capillary viscometer. Binder materials such as (carboxymethyl)cellulose, styrene-butadiene latex, poly(ethylene oxide), and starch are investigated in this study.
