Abstract

Glucose perfusions, 1 g/kg/h for 90 minutes, were carried out in 11 normal subjects. The same tests were repeated in the same subjects after treatment with butylbiguanide, 200 mg/day for one week. Indirect calorimetry, with measurements of 02 consumption, and RQ demonstrated a significant increase in carbohydrate oxidation with decrease in fat oxidation following therapy with biguanides.
