Abstract

Abstract In vitro multiplication of Smooth cayenne pineapple was tested in agar solidified full strength MS medium containing 6-benzyleaminopurine (BAP) at 2.25, 3.25, 4.25 and 5.25 mg l-1 alone and in combination with indole acetic acid (IAA) at 0.75, 1.75, 2.75 and 3.75 mg l-1. BAP at 2.25 mg l-1 induced the highest shoot formation (9 shoots/ 60 days). Other combinations of BAP and IAA resulted in either less or an equal shoot formation as that of singly applied BAP at 2.25 mg l-1. Statistical analysis showed that the shoot formation was mainly controlled by BAP. IAA, on the other hand, had no direct effect on shoot formation. However, it interacted significantly with BAP. The IAA interaction with BAP could be of positive and negative natures depending on the concentrations of both hormones. Singly applied BAP at 2.25 mg/l was the best for multiplication of secondary explants of Smooth cayenne pineapple.
