Abstract

Background and purpose: Impaired balance is strongly associated with function and recovery particularly in stroke patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Balance training on turning ability of geriatric stroke patients. Methods: Forty stroke hemiparetic male patients were participated in this study. Patient's age ranged from 60 to 65 years old. Patients were assigned into two equal groups; A and B. Group (A) received Balance training while group (B) received the traditional physical therapy protocol. Patients in both group received two months of training, three times per week. Patient's turning ability assessed using balance master system including step quick turn [turn sway (deg.)], limit of stability [direction control (%)] and also Berg balance scale. The Results: This study revealed that balance is significantly improved in the group (A) treated by Balance training than those of traditional physical therapy protocol. Conclusion: Turning ability could be considered a valuable method for treating balance in geriatric stroke patients. Balance training improves the turning ability in geriatric stroke patient.
