Abstract
To the Editor. —Several points made by Shelp et al in Effect of Azathioprine on Renal Histology in Lupus Nephritis in the October issue ( Arch Intern Med 128 :566-573, 1971) warrant comment. First, the authors do not mention their criteria for the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and thus one does not know how the criteria of the authors compare with those recently espoused by the American Rheumatism Association. 1 They do state that all of their patients had a positive lupus erythematosus preparation (LE) and some, positive antinuclear antibodies (ANA). One would expect the reverse, that is, all patients would have a positive ANA and the majority a positive LE preparation during periods of disease activity. 2 Taken by itself the authors' data are well presented and demonstrate the efficacy of azathioprine in renal disease due to SLE.
