Abstract

The influence of hot rolling average pass reduction ratio (APRR) on thickness-oriented microstructure and properties homogeneity of an Al–Zn–Mg–Cu aluminum alloy thick plate has been studied by mechanical properties, fracture toughness together with optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron backscattered diffraction microstructural examinations. Results show that the strength and fracture toughness were remarkably increased with the increase of APRR, and the thickness-oriented non-homogeneity of yield strength and fracture toughness were reduced by 38% and 36.5%, respectively. The significantly improvement of thickness-oriented homogeneity of strength and fracture toughness of alloy with higher APRR was attributed to the weaker shear texture, lower volume fraction of recrystallized grains and smaller constituent particles size.
