Abstract

Gold and cobalt catalysts supported on commercial ceria have been synthesized by deposition-precipitation technique. The effect of gold Au–Co/ceria catalysts in the WGS and Oxygen-enhanced WGS (OWGS) activity was discussed on the basis of catalysts structural, redox and oxygen adsorption properties of catalysts. It was found that addition of gold promoted the reducibility of both cobalt oxide and ceria, and increases considerably the OSC due to the synergism between gold and cobalt which, in turns, adsorbed more oxygen. In OWGS reaction an attempt to quantity the partial contribution of WGS, and CO oxidation and methanation was made for all the catalysts. The addition of a small amount of oxygen enhances the activity of gold- and cobalt-based catalysts in WGS reaction in the 190–350 °C temperature range. Moreover, additional hydrogen can be produced by OWGS reaction on both catalysts, which make OWGS as a very advantageous stage in hydrogen processing.
