Abstract

120 middle-aged women gave more detailed directions or additional helpful suggestions and were more willing to respond to a college-age female requesting directions when the latter was dressed conventionally rather than as a “hippie.” The data are consistent with the assumption that attire mediates perception of similarity and thus influences helping behavior.
