Abstract

The shear resistance of rock joints has always been of paramount importance in stability analysis of surface and underground rock structures. Many parameters influence the shear strength of rock joints among which surface asperity is highly crucial that has encouraged many researchers to work on. Among the pioneers working on the subject, Patton [1] was the first researcher who systematically studied the effect of joint asperity using simple physical models with two-dimensional toothshaped asperity.
