Abstract

In this study MMC with 10-submodule (SM) based arm is designed. The effect of arm inductance is investigated on efficiency of modular multilevel converter (MMC). Arm inductance must be selected properly to get high efficiency in addition to features of limiting short circuit fault current and circulating current. Efficiency of the MMC is found by considering total output power, total conduction and switching losses of the semiconductor devices. Phase shift (PS) pulse width modulation (PWM) and phase disposition (PD) PWM methods are also compared with respect to efficiency performance. PS-PWM is not so affected while PD-PWM is highly dependent with arm inductance change. Maximum efficiencies of the MMC are 99.59% and 99.67% respectively for the PS-PWM and PD-PWM methods.
