Abstract

Fe1-xAgx alloy films have been sputter-deposited on water-cooled substrates under Ar gas pressures, PAr, of 8.9 and 0.23 Pa (67 and 1.7 mTorr). X-ray diffraction, scanning electron micrography (SEM), the Mössbauer effect and magnetization measurements were made on these films. In contrast to the immiscibility of Fe and Ag even at 2300 K, the single bcc and fcc phases are obtained in these sputter-deposited alloys. The single bcc phase region is extended and the single fcc phase fcc phase region is reduced with increasing PAr. The alloy films deposited under a high PAr have a columnar structure in the SEM image and show a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the Mössbauer spectrum, while those under a low PAr have a fibrous structure in the SEM image and show an in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the Mössbauer spectrum.
