Abstract

Objective: Leukotrienes have been widely recognized as mediators of various inflammatory disorders and hypersensitivity reactions, and their roles in these diseases become the therapeutic targets. In gynecology, significant amounts of leukotrienes have been demonstrated in the endometrium and smooth muscle cells of patients with dysmenorrhoea, and also it has been reported that the concentration of cytokines, which activate the initiators of cascade for biosynthesis of leukotrienes, has been increased in endometriosis. However, no investigation about the value of anti-leukotriene therapy in endometriosis is presented still now. Besides, for evaluating a therapeutic effect in a disease, it is important that experimental animal model is established. Regarding experimental endometriosis, the surgical technique of uterine autotransplantation was developed for induction of rat endometriosis by Vernon et al, and we have already found the stromal proliferation, which bear a striking resemblance to the lesion in human endometriosis, in endometrium-attached peritoneum of rat. We considered that this rat model was useful for evaluating the effect of anti-leukotriene therapy in endometriosis.
