Abstract

This study was designed to show the histological changes of heart, kidney and liver of Wistar rats treated with Annona muricata plant extract upon oral administration of chloramphenicol. Thirty-five Wistar rats, divided into five groups of seven rats each was used for this study. The groups were normal control, untreated control and treated control administered 500mg/kg, 750mg/kg and 2250mg/kg body weight of Annona muricata plant extract respectively. This study lasted for four weeks. Organ specimens were obtained from each group to evaluate histological changes. This study revealed no histological changes in the heart muscle of Wistar rats given chloramphenicol. In the kidney, oral administration of chloramphenicol caused chronic pyelonephritis while the administration of this drug caused congestion in the liver. The administration of Annona muricata plant extract as treatment in 500mg/kg, 750mg/kg and 2250mg/kg doses helped reverse these damages in the kidney and liver tissues. Although rats treated with 750mg/kg body weight of Annona muricata exhibited inflammation in the heart muscle with an anaemia.
