Abstract

This study clarify the protective effect of Annona and turmeric mixture on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver injury in male albino rats. Forty male albino rats were used and randomly divided to four groups. The controlled group was the first group which was received a normal diet with intraperitoneal injection(0.5 ml/kg)of olive oil. All the three other groups received a CCl4(1 ml/kg) injection. In addition to the CCL4 injection, the third group received 1 ml annona juice and the fourth group received 200 mg/kg turmeric and 1ml of annona, for four weeks (March to April 2017) by oral gavages. The CCl4 injection caused significant alterations in the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), direct bilirubin, glutathione (GSH), and liver superoxide dismutase (SOD). In Annona muricata fruit and Turmeric combination treated rat a significant improvement ofGSH, liver SOD and AST, ALT, direct bilirubin Levelswere observed whileresults showed non-significant changes in the levels of ALP (alkaline phosphatase), liver HYP(Hydroxyproline). In this study, the histological paraffin section of the rat liver treated with CCl4showed that most of the hepatocytes were degenerated, and congestion of blood vessels and inflammatory leukocyte infiltration were observed that caused significant alterations in biochemical parameters. In contrast, the Annona muricata fruit and Turmeric combination treated group showed decreased degeneration of hepatocytes, and their epithelial cells appeared normal with few normal vacuoles, which indicated that mixture of both can be used as a natural source of antioxidant.
