Abstract

The effect of annealing temperature on microstructure and hardness of Ni-Co alloy coating electroplated on Cr-Ni-Mo-V steel was investigated by integrating micro-Vickers hardness test, electron backscatter diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses. It was found that the hardness of Ni-Co alloy coating dropped suddenly with the increase in the annealing temperature to 350 ℃, and then gradually decreased with the further increase in the annealing temperature. The result of microstructural characterization indicated that the grains started to merge and grow in Ni-Co alloy coating at annealing temperature of 350 ℃ which led to a decrease in the amount of grain boundaries, thus the initial dislocation density decreased with the increase in the annealing temperature up to 650 ℃. The oxidation of the formed Ni-Co coating was considered to be the second factor giving rise to the reduction in hardness with increasing annealing temperature.
