Abstract

Summary Cholesterol fed rabbits were given 50 mg/day of Anna Pavala Sindhooram (APS) orally for 6 months and the metabolism of plasma lipoproteins was studied. The changes in the activity of post-heparin lipases (lipoprotein lipase, hepatic lipase) cholesterol ester synthetase (CES) and hydrolase (CEH) were followed by assaying their activities during cholesterol feeding and APS therapy. It was observed that APS causes reduction in the atherogenic lipoproteins by increasing post-heparin lipolytic activities and reduces the cholesterol ester metabolizing activities. The probable mechanism of action of APS is compared with that of other hypolipidemic drugs.
