Abstract

The effect of testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosteorne (DHT) on plasma concentratons of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in anestrous ewes was studied. The administration of TP markedly increased plasma concentrations of LH and FSH. LH began to increase 16-24 hours after injection reached a maximum between 20-30 hours and then returned to pretreatment levels by 28-36 hours. The duration of the increase varied between 10-18 hours. The changes in FSH following TP injection were similar to those for LH; maximum values ranged between 107-180 ng/ml. DHT did not markedly affect LH or FSH concentrations in any of the ewes. The results indicate that TP treatment of intact anestrous ewes stimulates the pituitary release of LH and FSH as does estradiol-17beta. The results are discussed.
