Abstract

Abstract This work investigates the effect of andalusite with different particle sizes (8-5 mm, 5-3 mm, 3-1 mm) on the properties of Al2O3–SiC–C castables. It has been found that the addition of andalusite aggregates not only improves high-temperature strength and thermal shock resistance of the materials, but additionally favors the oxidation resistance of the castables. The phases and microstructure of the castables were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The microstructural observation suggests that the enhanced oxidation resistance of Al2O3–SiC–C castables with andalusite aggregates addition results from the obstruction of the pore channel and improved densification of the castables caused by andalusite mullitization, which prevent oxygen diffusion inside the castables.
