Abstract

The effect of 0.0025 and 0.005 M glutamic acid, proline and hydroxyproline on the nitrogen fixing ability of three nitrogen fixing microbes was investigated. From the studies it is evident that presence of glutamic acid in the culture medium is most favourable for the fixation of nitrogen by all the three nitrogen fixers. Sufficient nitrogen is fixed by the organisms in presence of 0.0025 and 0.005 M proline also. Presence of 0.0025 and 0.005 M hydroxyproline is inhibitory for fixation of nitrogen by all the three organism studied; which are designated here as D 3 , B 3 and B. Die Wirkung von 0,0025 und 0,005 M Glutaminsäure, Prolin und Hydroxyprolin auf die Tätigkeit von drei stickstoffbindenden Mikroorganismen wurde untersucht. Die Untersuchungen ergaben, daß die Anwesenheit von Glutaminsäure im Nährboden die N-Fixierung durch alle drei Arten sehr günstig beeinflußt. Genügend Stickstoff wird von den Organismen auch bei Anwesenheit von 0,0025 und 0,005 M Prolin fixiert. Gleiche Mengen an Hydroxyprolin behindern die N-Fixierung durch die drei untersuchten Mikroorganismenarten, die hier als D 3 , B 3 und B bezeichnet werden.
