Abstract

High-alumina low-cement castables with Dinger and Funk particle size distribution coefficients of 0.27 and 0.29 were studied using two different alumina fines, namely WTA fine and reactive alumina. The castables were processed as per normal processing and properties were compared at three different temperatures. Mixing was achieved at ∼5% moisture level with good flowability values. Castables with different PSDs resulted in properties that are comparable or better than the conventional commercially available systems. Very high strengths (∼50 MPa) were obtained even after drying and fired (1550°C) samples showed strengths above 120 MPa.
