Abstract

The structure of melt-quenched microcrystalline Fe-Mn-Nb-Si-B alloys has been studied by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Two metastable phases related to the α-Mn structure type are revealed: an aperiodic phase with cubic symmetry and a hexagonal phase with an axial ratio c/a = 0.62. When these phases precipitate simultaneously, they have a strict orientation relationship. The effects of manganese, niobium, and boron on the formation and thermal stability of the crystalline and amorphous phases and on the parameters of the aperiodic structure are discussed.
