Abstract

The prevalence of obesity and morbid obesity in the United States has exponentially increased over the past several decades. In addition, the elderly population is expected to be the dominant age group by the year 2030 and today represents more than 12% of the total population. Obese elderly patients are increasingly undergoing elective and emergent general surgery. We aim to determine if there is a synergistic effect of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Age on morbidity and mortality in elective and emergent general surgery.
