Abstract
The effect of the addition of TiB 2 powder on the amorphous phase formation in a La 55 Al 25 Ni 20 alloy by controlling the fraction of its powder. These alloys are melted by a high frequency induction furnace, and quenched in water. Specimens are in the shape of a disk, 12 mm in diameter and I to 8 mm thick. The structure of the specimen consists of amorphous single phase or amorphous phase plus partly crystalline phase. In the alloy without addition of TiB 2 powder, amorphous phase forms only in the surface region of the specimen. By the addition of TiB 2 powder, amorphous phase comes to exist not only the surface but also the inside of the specimen, and the crystalline phase appears around TiB 2 particles. According to image processing analysis, the amorphous area in the composite material is enlarged in comparison with the case without addition of TiB 2 powder. The amorphous area increases with the fraction of TiB 2 in the composite material. The optimum incorporation fraction of TiB 2 is 10 mass% for the fraction of amorphous phase and for the uniform dispersion of its powder.
