Abstract
The effect of rat cytomegalovirus (RCMV) infection on the extrinsic antiviral activity of peritoneal rat macrophages was investigated. The presence of a non-interferon-like antiviral substance in the supernatant of the culture of peritoneal macrophages of normal rats was shown. This antiviral activity was altered during an RCMV infection in vitro resulting in the absence of activity in the supernatant of macrophages harvested at 4 days post RCMV infection. The antiviral activity was also present in vivo, namely in the peritoneal cavity of normal rats. RCMV infection altered this antiviral effect resulting in an enhancement at days 2 to 5 post infection.
