Abstract

The activity of acetylcholinesterase in rat brain was decreased by 70% 1 hr after oral administration of dichlorvos (DDVP, O,O-dimethyl- O-2,2-dichlorvinyl-phosphate) in a dose corresponding to 50% of the LD50; after 14 days of administration of 5% of the LD50, the activity decreased by 45%. In neither case was the activity of whole brain choline acetyltransferase or the contents of acetylcholine and choline altered. However, in the cerebral hemispheres, and especially the corpus striatum, acetylcholine was considerably increased without a concomitant change in choline.
