Abstract

The inhibitory effect of interferon on multiplication of Western equine encephalitis virus was markedly reduced when cells were treated with either actinomycin D or puromycin dihydrochloride at the same time as the interferon, as well as when they were treated with actinomycin D before the interferon. These results with actinomycin D, which inhibits RNA synthesis, and puromycin, which inhibits protein synthesis, suggest that both RNA and protein must be synthesized by cells treated with interferon before the interferon can inhibit virus multiplication.
