Abstract

In the first study, the author developed a structured intervention program for cancer patients, which consisted of five weekly sessions including psychoeducation, problem solving, psychological support, relaxation training, and imagery. Comparing the POMS (Profile of Mood States) scores demonstrated a significant improvement in psychological distress. Because this effect did not persist for patients with adjustment disorders or lymph node metastasis, they received three additional intervention sessions, which demonstrated persisting effects. In the second study, caregivers of dementia victims received a similar structured intervention. Comparing the results of the POMS and the GHQ-30 (General Health Questionnaire-30) revealed a significant improvement in physical and psychological distress. Also, there was a highly significant improvement of natural killer cell activity. The two studies demonstrated that a structured group intervention was effective for physical and psychological distress, and also for immune function. Further study is needed for development of psychoneuroimmunology.
