Abstract

The effect of rust infection on photophosphorylation was determined with chloroplasts isolated from Vicia faba leaves. From the period of extensive haustorial penetration (2 days after inoculation) to the onset of uredospore differentiation (7 days after inoculation), noncyclic photophosphorylation with NADP or ferricyanide as acceptor was inhibited, whereas cyclic photophosphorylation catalyzed by either ferredoxin or phenazine methosulfate was less affected. Evidence is presented that the suppression of ATP formation in noncyclic photophosphorylation induced by the parasite was mainly due to an inhibition of electron transport from water to NADP or ferricyanide.
