Abstract

The results of theoretical and experimental studies on the effect of a nonuniform stress-strain state (SSS) on the failure of structural components is presented. The experimental studies were carried out on flat and cylindrical shell samples. In order to describe the deformation process a nonlinear dependence of the stressstrain state was used. This took into consideration interaction weakening which occurs in the material after the ultimate strength has been reached leading to the appearance of an upper limit on the stress-strain curve. The value of the failure load determined using the descending branch of the diagram are in good agreement with those found experimentally. The effects of large variations in the SSS were experimentally examined on Whatman samples containing stress concentrations in the form of cuts and holes.
