Abstract

The effect of a magnetic field on the transmission spectra of magnetic fluids with magnetite nanoparticles in kerosene is studied depending on the particle size. It was found that in a colloid with an average particle size of less than 10 nm, the effect of changing transmittance does not exceed 10–15 %. In a sample with larger particles (12–25 nm), the effect is much greater (up to 50 % or more). A qualitative explanation of the effect is carried out on the basis of the orientational theory of optical effects.
