Abstract

We investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of magnetic pressure produced on the surface of a closed rectangular container containing a magnetic compound fluid (MCF). The fluid is a mixture of magnetic fluid (MF) and magneto-rheological fluid (MRF), and contains μm-sized iron particles and nm-sized magnetite particles. We compare the experimental data regarding the pressures produced by the application of a magnetic field to MCF, MF and MRF, respectively. The experimental results regarding MCF are evaluated using the well-known magnetic pressure theory concerning MF. Investigations are performed as well by using a cluster model of aggregated particles obtained from results observed by microscope. We can explain our experimental results in terms of the clusters’ behavior under a magnetic field.
