Abstract

In a study of the effects of parenteral administration of 5-methoxytryptophol on the reproductive system of prepuberal and pubertal male rats, 100 mcg/day subcutaneous injections in 21-day-old Wistar male rats over a 21-day period slightly reduced growth of the anterior pituitaries, seminal vesicles, testes, and ventral prostates. Daily 300 mcg doses significantly (p.001) reduced the weight of the ventral prostates. The results for the same treatment in 30-day-old rats indicated no significant differences between control and experimental animals. It is concluded that currently there is no satisfactory explanation for the data obtained.
