Abstract

Morehouse and Mayfield (1946) reported that 3-nitro, 4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid had growth stimulating properties for chicks. This observation was confirmed by Bird et al. (1948, 1949). In further work Morehouse (1948) found that pullets receiving this arsonic acid derivative continuously from time of hatching weighed more at 24 weeks of age and came into production at an earlier age than unmedicated control birds. The birds in the above experiments did not receive an antibiotic in their feed.Lillie and Bird (1950) found that 3-nitro, 4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid stimulates growth in the presence of an antibiotic, in some, but not in all cases. Combs and Laurent (1952) and Milligan et al. (1953) have confirmed the observation that this arsonic acid derivative increases growth in the presence of an antibiotic. In these experiments the birds were carried to broiler age or less. Little or no information is available on the value of the arsonic …
