Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect and safety of atorvastatin combined with donepezil for Alzheimer disease. Methods Eighty-six patients with Alzheimer disease were divided into observation group and control group with 43 cases each by random digits table method. The control group was treated with donepezil and the observation group was given atorvastatin combined with donepezil for 6 months. The blood lipid levels, mini mental state examination (MMSE),activity of daily living scale (ADL),general decline scale (GDS) score and adverse reaction between two groups were compared. Results The total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol after treatment in observation group was lower than that in control group [(3.24 ± 0.47) mmol/L vs.(5.28 ± 1.12) mmol/L,(1.87 ± 0.25) mmol/L vs.(3.32 ± 0.35) mmol/L,P < 0.05],and high density lipoprotein cholesterol was higher than that in control group [(1.55 ± 0.27)mmol/L vs.(1.08 ± 0.29) mmol/L,P < 0.05].There was significant difference in the total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesferol before and after treatment in observation group (P < 0.05).The MMSE score after treatment was higher than that before treatment in observation group and control group [(14.52 ± 2.83) scores vs.(11.85 ± 3.32) scores,(13.11 ± 2.58) scores vs.(11.79 ±3.04) scores,P <0.05],ADL score and GDS score was lower than that before treatment [observation group:(36.07 ± 4.57) scores vs.(46.39 ± 6.07) scores,(4.15 ± 0.38) scores vs.(5.72 ± 0.48)scores,control group:(41.52 ± 5.31) scores vs.(46.18 ± 6.63)scores,(5.24 ± 0.41) scores vs.(5.65 ± 0.51)scores,P <0.05].The incidence of adverse reaction was 4.65% (2/43) in observation group, and 2.33%(1/43) in control group, and there was no significant difference between two groups (P > 0.05).Conclusion Atorvastatin combined with donepezil is effective and safe for the treatment of Alzheimer disease. Key words: Alzheimer disease; Atorvastatin; Donepezil
