Abstract

Some squash producers in the region of Goiânia (Brazil) prune the top of the main vine in order to increase and/or anticipate production by stimulating lateral branching. In this trial, carried out at the Escola de Agronomia da Universidade Federal de Goias, Goiânia, vine pruning was tested on the cv. ‘Menina Brasileira’. Fruits were harvested twice a week, from November 17 to December 23 (1993). Significant differences between treatment and control were found neither in number and weight of fruits nor in distribution of the yield over the harvest period. The pruned plants however were slightly earlier in production. This should be investigated with more accuracy. KEY-WORDS: Squash; vine pruning.
