Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of the extract of Gentianella alborosea as a treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by high-fat diet in female Holtzman rats. Methods: Design: An incomplete experimental study was developed. Location: National University of San Marcos, Lima, Peru. Participants: Female Holtzman rats. Interventions: 32 rats were divided into 4 groups: control -, control +, dose 1 (35mg/kg) and dose 2 (70mg/kg. NAFLD was induced by high-fat diet (carbohydrates: 26%, lipids: 59% and protein: 15% calories) for a period of 21 days, ad libitum. Then aqueous extract of Gentianella alborosea was administered for 4 days. Finally, the livers were removed to evaluate the histopatho logical alterations of liver parenchyma.Main outcome measures: We performed microscopic counting of hepatocytes affected by single large lipid droplets, and the results were compared using ANOVA (p <0.05) and Tukey’s HSD (p <0.05).Results: We found significant differences (p <0.05) in the percentage of hepatocytes affected between dose 1 (3.25 ± 2.27) and positive control groups (7.50 ± 3.76). Furthermore, no significant difference was found between dose 1 and dose 2 groups. Conclusion: We did not found any effect of the extract of Gentianella alborosea as a treatment for NAFLD. We strongly recommend further studies.
