Abstract
Objective To assess the effectiveness of Kaltenborn's wedge assisted posteroanterior mobilization of the lumbar rachis in chronic low back pain sufferers. Method Randomized clinical trial. A hundred patients with chronic low back pain (more than 3 months), both sexes, age between 18 and 65 years, where randomly assigned in two groups: a group treated with Kaltenborn's wedge assisted posteroanterior mobilization of the lumbar rachis and a control group untreated. Outcome measures were: pain, disability and range of movement in flexion, extension and sides-bending. Assessors were blinded for patient assigned group. Results Intervention group shows a significant improvement in pain (p < 0.001), lateral bending mobility (right side p < 0.004, left side p < 0.002) and disability degree (p < 0.003). Patients show a good tolerance to the technique (53.4% describe the technique as agreeable o very agreeable). Most treated patients (68.9 %) declare a clinically significant improvement. Conclusions Although no isolated technique can solve this pathology, Kaltenborn's wedge assisted posteroanterior mobilization of the rachis has proved to be well tolerated by patients and it is effective for pain release, increasing mobility and disability improvement. This technique must join the therapeutic methods for chronic low back pain patients.
